Publication in AWM

11 11 2009

Protospace 4.0 project was published in the November issue of  ‘Architektenweb Magazine’. It is a research project done in the Hyperbody studio at the TU Delft in colaboration with ONL. WF’s Agata Kycia and Krzysztof Gornicki were involed in  3D modelling and writing a generative procedure in rhinoscript. The project is going to be realised in Delft in summer 2010.

WF_093 at OSSA’09 Poznań

27 10 2009

WF_093 workshop took place in Poznań, Poland from Oct 17th untill Oct 23rd.  We started with the introduction to generative and parametric design tools and the introduction to digital fabrication. After the participants developed the idea we started designing. All 13 participants developed the form using Rhinoscripting. We were able to parametrically adjust the final form to the sheets size of the material. The object was fabricated from 8mm MDF sheets using a 2-axis CNC mill.

Workshops Factory tutoring at OSSA’09

20 10 2009

Workshops Factory was invited by OSSA to tutor one section of the workshop taking place in Poznań from October 17th to 23rd . Our subject was to rethink the relation between the last floor of Collegium Altum building and the eerie feeling associate with the space. After participants developed the idea they started generating a 3D model using Rhinoscripting. When the model is finished we will prepare PLT files and fabricate using 2-axis CNC milling machine. The result will be presented on Friday the 23rd at “Stara Drukarnia” in Poznań, Poland.

WF started teaching at WAPW

15 10 2009

WF members are now instructing a first year seminar at The Warsaw University of Technology called ” Parametric modeling and CAM technologies ” . With a group of 17 students we are planning to design and fabricate a 1:1 scale installation in the Faculty of Architecture at WAPW during the coming semester

Y parametric Table at LDZIGN

13 10 2009

Y parametric table was selected as one of 17 projects that are going to be shown on make me! 2009 exhibition during International Design Festival LODZ DESIGN 2009. The exhibition is on display in ŁÓDŹ ART CENTER from 15th until 31st of October.

WF_092: 17th – 21st of August in Warsaw

24 08 2009

WF_092 was a workshop about parametric modeling and digital fabrication which took place from 17th till 21th of August 2009 in Warsaw. We would kindly like to thank Bentley Systems and for their valuable help in organizing it. Our parametric tool was Generative Components and digital fabrication tool was a 2d water jet.

17th of August begun with a general introduction to computational design: from computational forms to the potential of artificial intelligence in design. An introduction to computational design tools such as parametric modeling, scripting and programming followed. We have spent the rest of the day on type-along GC tutorials.

18th of August begun with an introduction to computer aided manufacturing. From then on workshop’s participants worked in teams on parametric designs of urban furniture.

A mock-up of one of the designs was manufactured using water-jet and assembled on the 21st of August.

We would like to thanks to all of the participants for their inspiring and hard work.

Below is a video screen capture of the manufactured model in GC and a couple of images of the final piece:

WF_092 is currently taking place

20 08 2009

We are currently tutoring WF_092 – a Generative Components and digital fabrication workshop in Warsaw. It is organized in collaboration with Bentley Systems and The workshop begun on 17th on August. We have spent four days on modeling and scripting in GC at the premises of Bentley Systems’ division in Poland. Tomorrow we are visiting the water jet fabrication facility in order to cut out and assemble urban furniture designed by workshop’s participants

Parametric Table Fabricated

9 08 2009

Here are some photos of the first prototype of the table. All the elements of the table were fabricated from one sheet of 18mm thick playwood. They were cut using water jet technology which does not interfere with the material’s inherent structure, as there is no “heat-affected zone”. This tool cuts using a mixture of water with an abrasive substance at high velocity and pressure. This gives a possibility to cut intricate and small elements which could already become final parts.

Parametric Table

2 08 2009

The aim of the project was to design a table, which could easily be mass customized. To do that I decided that the whole table will be produced from one flat sheet  of material using  only one digital fabrication technique. Streamlining the process, I decided to use water jet technology for efficient fabrication, which also works with wood-like materials and doesn’t require postproduction finishing.

The whole project is done as a parametric definition in Grasshopper. At the end when all the details were embedded it turned out to be quite messy. As this is still a first version approaching to be prototyped I intend to modify and clean it up later on.
