Y parametric table was selected as one of 17 projects that are going to be shown on make me! 2009 exhibition during International Design Festival LODZ DESIGN 2009. The exhibition is on display in ŁÓDŹ ART CENTER from 15th until 31st of October.

WF is about to teach at WAPW

Starting from October 2009, workshops factory is going to run a seminar during the master course at the Warsaw University of Technology. The seminar will raise the theme of computing in architecture, being focused on parametric modelling and CAM technologies.The aim of the course will be to fabricate 1:1 scale installation at the faculty of architecture at WAPW.





Parametric Table Fabricated

Here are some photos of the first prototype of the table. All the elements of the table were fabricated from one sheet of 18mm thick playwood. They were cut using water jet technology which does not interfere with the material’s inherent structure, as there is no “heat-affected zone”. This tool cuts using a mixture of water with an abrasive substance at high velocity and pressure. This gives a possibility to cut intricate and small elements which could already become final parts.

Parametric Table

The aim of the project was to design a table, which could easily be mass customized. To do that I decided that the whole table will be produced from one flat sheet  of material using  only one digital fabrication technique. Streamlining the process, I decided to use water jet technology for efficient fabrication, which also works with wood-like materials and doesn’t require postproduction finishing.

The whole project is done as a parametric definition in Grasshopper. At the end when all the details were embedded it turned out to be quite messy. As this is still a first version approaching to be prototyped I intend to modify and clean it up later on.

workshops factory at OSSA 2009

OSSA students assembly invited workshops factory to guide one of workshops at OSSA2009 in Poznań, Poland, October 2009. Partisipants will work on subject given by OSSA “Emocje Poznania” and will fabricate products or furniture using the two axis CNC milling machine.

Participants should apply in September at ossa.org.pl. Information about applications will be available at ossa.org.pl.

We would once again like to thank the Warsaw University of Technology, and especially dr. Krzysztof Koszewski and dr. Jan Słyk for their collaboration and encouragement. Also big thanks to Marcin Brzeski and Łukasz Malaszewski as well as to all of the WF_091 participants: Gal, Krzysztof, Tomasz, Ewa, Marcin, Karolina, Kama, Monika, Andrzej, Radek, Michał, Marta, Maciej, Iza, Tomasz, Franek and Mariusz for their great engagement during these intensive few days. It was a great experience to work side by side with all of you.

Workshop WF_091 day3 (05.04.2009)

In the morning of the third day of the workshop, we fabricated a seat for the first group using a wire thermocut. In the same time, other groups kept on exploring Rhino Script. In the end, we managed to make 1:1 models of three seats.

Workshop WF_091 day2 (04.04.2009)

The second day of the workshop started with an introduction to Rhino Script presented by Agata Kycia and Krzysztof Górnicki. After that, the workshop project brief was introduced to the participants. Divided in six groups of three, participants begun working on the brief, with the help and support of the Workshops Factory team. Projects were discussed not only in small groups, but also in the presence of all participants.

Workshop WF_091 day 1 (03.04.2009)

On the 3rd of March 2009, Workshops Factory in cooperation with The Faculty of Architecture at Warsaw University of Technology organized workshop on RhinoScript and digital fabrication. First day WF gave three lectures: Michal Piasecki introduced participants to the topic of generative process,  Dorota Kabała spoke about Computer Aided Manufacturing, showing examples of applications of the CNC technologies in the fields of design and architecture, whilst Krystian Kwieciński gave a lecture on the subject of “Design as a flow of information management”.

“parametryczna” sofa – model z wycinarki laserowej; “parametric” couch – laser cutter model

Hexagonalna siatka zapisana w skrypcie na poczatku okazala sie niemozliwa do fabrykacji ze wzgledu na ograniczenie czasowe. Skrypt zostal wiec nieco zmodyfikowany, tak by generowal serie dodatkowych przekrojow pomiedzy tymi z ktorych zostala wyloftowana plaszczyzna siedziska. Model z wycinarki laserowej ma ok. 25 cm dlugosci.

Initially scripted hexagonal mesh turned out to be impossible to fabricate due to time constraint. Therefore the script was slightly modifies to create a series of additional sections from the surface between the initial sections through which the seating surface was lofted. The laser cutter model is approximately 25 cm long.
